Duolingo and Klingon

Bringing us back earlier in the semester to Star Trek and Jenkins' article on Star Trek, especially his optimistic approach to the consumer-producer. The language learning app Duolingo is developing a set of courses for Klingon. The app also has a program called the Incubator where you can apply to help develop a variety of language courses.

  1. This involvement of creating a language understood between a group of people intrigues me due to the fact that the evolution of linguistic systems is too academic. I have read elsewhere that some find this to be "childish" and "insignificant," but on the contrary, this allows us to understand the formation of group and language systems. This also exposes society's tendency to dictate "proper" language and deplore anything that does not fit the ideal.
